Meditation:
Where It All Begins
“Breath taught me to listen, first to myself, then to everything else.”
Before I ever heard an animal, I learned to listen from nature. You can begin that same practice today, with a tree, your pet, or your own breath.
I was standing still once, waiting for nothing in particular, when the light shifted and the air changed. I had the clear sense that the place had noticed me. And I heard something back.
That was what taught me to sit with myself the same way, and that changed something deeper. The animals came after. It was never separate things: looking within, listening to a tree, hearing an animal. It was one practice, pointed in different directions over time. I call it arriving at presence.
The practice
No study or belief required. This meditation takes a few minutes and something to sit with.
Choose who you'll listen to: your pet, a tree or other piece of nature, or your own breath.
Find a quiet spot, sit near them, and feel your feet on the ground.
Breathe in for three seconds, hold for five, breathe out for three. Adjust the count to whatever feels comfortable. Repeat until your mind settles. If it wanders, just come back to the count.
Ask one simple question, like what do you want me to know today?
Listen. Stay a minute or two, without forcing an answer.
The answer may be small: a single image, a feeling of being steadied, a sentence that arrives whole. That counts. That's how it begins.
Where it can lead
This isn't only about hearing your animal. It's a practice of self-knowledge, meeting yourself as honestly as you meet them. For me, it grew into a life's work: first within, then with nature, then with animals and the people who love them. Some do it simply to feel calmer. Others find it opens a door to themselves, or to the animal they didn't know was waiting to be heard.
Noticing what your animal offers builds a relationship no single reading can replace. Sessions open a door; this keeps it open.
If it opens that door for you, I'd love to help you walk through it.
